One thing you should know about me…I am obsessed with Mindy Kaling. She is so incredibly talented, funny, down to earth, and driven. She was the first female writer for The Office (writing over 22 episodes!) and she also starred in the show as Kelly Kapoor. Following this shows major success Kaling took the plunge and created her own show “The Mindy Project,” which is absolutely hysterical. Also, if you haven’t already read Kaling’s first book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? And Other Concerns” you better hurry before her second book titled “Why Not Me?” comes out! There is something about the title of her second book that immediately resonated with me. Although this book is not set to release until October 2015, the title really got me thinking.
Throughout 2015 I want to keep this motto with me, “Why Not Me?” because lets face it, if you don’t ask yourself this question who else will? Recently I was allowed to sit in on a meeting at work. There were over a dozen other people in the room, all different levels, discussing an upcoming endeavor. Many people immediately chimed in. I, however, thought about my opinion for a few moments, while others quickly made remarks. I wanted not only to digest the information to make an informed and thoughtful response, but to be honest I was pretty nervous. Then there was a break in responses and I decided to speak up. I kid you not every single person turned their heads to look at me and the entire room went silent for a moment. Then the reactions started pouring in, “That’s a great idea!” “Wait, yes, I love that.” I honestly was shocked that they felt so strongly (and positively!) about my input, but then I realized, “Yes, this is where I am supposed to be.” It gave me that sliver of confidence that I am capable and have a lot of growth opportunities. That moment of speaking up embodied this idea of “Why not me?” because who says I cannot make a difference? I know that 2015 will be a big transition year full of growth and change, which both terrifies and excites me. I want to remember throughout the year that at any opportunity, I have the capacity to do it, whatever “it” might be. Because honestly…why not me!?
