I read magazines religiously, and over the years there have been a few key articles that have stuck with me. One that I remember most vividly was an article on signature scents. Our sense of smell is one of the most powerful tools we have, it can bring back memories and remind us of people long gone. It is incredible how a certain perfume or scent can transport us back in time.
Now, I have never really been a perfume person, but there are countless smells that always take me back to a memory or moment in time. The Victoria’s Secret Amber Romance spray will always remind me of my summers spent at sleepaway camp when one of my roommates (named Amber!) would dose the room with this scent. Vera Wang’s Princess always reminds me of my Australian roommate Alice. She and I both loved this scent and sprayed it before we went out in Sydney. Marc Jacob’s Honey perfume reminds me of my friend Alex, because at the time we were both testing it out! I have many more examples, but it is clear throughout my life that I have found scent to be a key component of my memories
After reading this article, I was also reminded of the importance of having your own scent and more importantly, keeping that perfume to yourself. Everyone is unique and should have their own scent reflected in the perfect aroma. However, the author of the article stressed the importance of keeping your signature scent to yourself. If others ask, be nonchalant and don’t reveal your perfume, otherwise you will soon smell “your” scent on them. While reading this article, I realized that I had not truly ever found my own signature scent, and immediately set out on a quest to find it. Now, after many months of smelling hundreds of perfumes (which resulted in many headaches!) I think I have found my signature scent. Obviously, I am not going to reveal my perfume…but I thought I would round up my top contenders!
Each of these scents is unique and smells amazing! Maybe your signature scent could be found in this bunch! I challenge you to go out and find your signature scent…it takes time but it is completely worth it!
