Since graduating in May a lot has happened. I have moved back home, started a new job, and basically started the true “adult phase” of my life. With this new step comes very strange experiences that seem to solidify that I am actually an adult (whether or not I want to admit that to myself!). Each of these moments continually reminds me that yup, I am not a college student anymore. Some are good, some are bad, and some are just very unexpected. So in honor of the fact that I am finally starting to wrap my head around the fact that I am an adult, here is a list of ways you know you have reached this stage. Every day I think of a new one to add to the list. So here it goes, “you know you’re an adult when…
You are asked if your last name is your married name
You are asked if you have any children
When you see a cute guy, you immediately check his hand for a wedding ring
You have to figure out how much money you want to put into your 401K
You worry about commuting times and constantly give yourself a “cushion” just in case
You get excited at the idea of decorating your cubicle
Bedtime ranges from 10pm to 11pm, any later and you cannot function the next day
You look forward to bedtime more than you ever did in college, and you are always tired
Shopping trips now consist of asking the question “Which slacks will this sweater work with?” or “This will go perfectly with my favorite blazer!”
You worry about your credit score
Vacation days are incredibly valuable and must be used wisely
You have a five-year plan/have a better understanding of your ideal career trajectory
LinkedIn is the only way to keep track of where all your friends are working
Of course there are many more signs, but from each of these experiences I knew without a doubt that I had truly entered “the real world.” I am excited for what is to come, and I am ready to see what changes vs. what stays the same. At the end of the day, I am still me just in a new phase, one that has been very new and exciting since it began.
Have you ever experienced something that solidified that you were an adult? Any strange or bizarre moments? Morphing from college student to full blown adult is such a weird process and I hope that this list highlighted the many facets of these new ” real world” experiences.
